Limón Awaits: a quick guide to Costa Rica’s South Caribbean Gem

As a Costa Rican, I’ve always felt that Limón has been unfairly overlooked when it comes to support and investment — in tourism, infrastructure, or community programs. And yet, this province is one of the country’s most unique and captivating regions. It feels almost like a different country entirely, with its own rich traditions, dialects, gastronomy, history, music, and artsy energy.

Limón takes the lead when it comes to agriculture, serving as the heart of Costa Rica’s export industry with staples like bananas, pineapples, and cacao. At local fruit stands, you’ll also discover exotic finds such as jackfruit and starfruit.

Puerto Viejo, in particular, delivers the ultimate Costa Rican experience infused with a Caribbean soul. A blend of salt, sunlight, reggae, coconut, and palm trees. A slow sway between jungle and sea. Wild yet refined, and undeniably boutique.

One of my favorite things about visiting this area is how easy it is to explore a variety of beaches — each with its own personality. During the dry months, many of them are connected through scenic coastal trails, allowing you to walk or bike from one stretch of sand to the next. It’s a magical way to experience the coast — one moment shaded by the jungle, the next stepping out onto a secluded cove or a lively surf beach.

My connection to this region runs deep. And my roots in Limón have always shown me that this destination can embody coastal sophistication — with its white-sand beaches, crystalline waters, and a creative spirit all its own.

The whole area is home to beautiful boutique hotels, delicious restaurants, vibrant little shops, one-of-a-kind experiences, and architecture that mixes wood and whimsical patterns — all bursting with color, culture, and originality.

Let’s dive into the ins and outs of the perfect hideaway on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast.

How to get there?

First things first, lets get you there:

By Car — set out on an exciting road trip along Route 32: Carretera Braulio Carrillo. While you don’t need a specific type of vehicle to get to Limón, keep in mind that this route can be affected by weather, and the Zurquí Tunnel is occasionally closed due to maintenance or conditions.

It’s definitely a wild ride; mist clings to the trees, waterfalls cascade down steep cliffs, and the jungle seems to close in around you. The curvy road passes right through Braulio Carrillo National Park, a destination well worth a stop if you have time and an adventurous spirit.

As you move beyond the park the weather begins to shift; the air gets warmer, the skies open up, and the road levels out. From there, it’s smooth cruising into Caribbean paradise.

By Air — if you’re looking to save time and take in the views from above, flying is a smooth and scenic option. Daily domestic flights from San José (SJO) to the Limón Airport (LIO) are available and take about 35 minutes  — a dramatic contrast to the 4.5–5-hour usual drive.

The flight itself is part of the experience: you’ll fly  over verdant mountain ranges, misty rainforest canopies, banana plantations and eventually descend toward the shimmering blue of the Caribbean Sea.

Once you land in Limón, it’s a short and easy drive (approx. 1 hour) to Puerto Viejo, Playa Cocles, or Playa Chiquita.

Typically, a car service can be arranged with your hotel concierge from the airport or to wherever you need to be.

If you are feeling active around town, Aguas Claras has free bikes to take exploring, and there is a bike rental place right next to Le Cameleon where you can get one for around $8 USD per day.  Alternatively, you can opt for a golf cart rental for around $50-$75 USD per day.

Flying is ideall for those who want to maximize relaxation, minimize transit time and travel in style. This is the fastest way to start your Caribbean escape.

It offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, featuring a refined fusion of Caribbean and international cuisine. The ambiance is relaxed yet sophisticated, with an open-air design that embraces the surrounding nature.

A short stroll through the greenery leads you to DaLime Beach Club, set on a secluded, palm-fringed beach with calm, clear waters. It’s the kind of place where time slows, the sea sparkles, and creativity flows freely — lounge  under a tree, sketch in your notebook, or simply soak in the serene beauty of the South Caribbean Sea.

Breathe and Realign

Among the thoughtful amenities at the hotel, the open-air yoga shala offers a serene escape. Crafted from natural materials, the space welcomes gentle breezes and the soothing sounds of birdsong, creating an atmosphere of calm. With its wooden floors, high ceilings, and peaceful energy, it invites all practitioners to slow down, realign, and reconnect with the present moment.

Guests are welcome to join scheduled classes or use the space freely for personal practice. In addition to yoga and meditation, the shala occasionally hosts Caribbean-inspired movement sessions, sound healing with Afro-Costa Rican instruments, and creative workshops that honor the area’s indigenous and Afro-Caribbean roots; like cacao ceremonies, intention setting with driftwood and shells, or meditative art inspired by the ocean and jungle.

During my stay, I experienced a private Yogalates session here — a beautiful blend of mindful movement and core strength — surrounded by nature’s soundtrack and filtered sunlight. It was a moment to realign both body and mind.

The Art of Escape

Aguas Claras is a place for travelers who seek soul and story, who appreciate design, nature, and authenticity. Whether you’re unwinding in your art-filled bungalow, practicing sunrise yoga in the jungle, or savoring coconut-laced Caribbean flavors by the sea — every moment is infused with warmth, color, and quiet magic.

Insider Tips for Your Trip

Before you set off to explore Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast, here are a few tips to help you plan and enjoy your stay to the fullest:

When to visit
The Caribbean coast dances to its own rhythm — including the weather. The sunniest, driest months tend to be February–April and September–October, when you’ll have the best chance of clear skies and calm seas. But don’t be discouraged by a passing shower — the rainforest thrives on these bursts of rain, and the region’s lush beauty shines year-round.

Local vibe
Life moves slower here — embrace it. Expect friendly faces, reggae beats, and an unhurried pace. Many businesses are small and family-owned, so opening hours can vary — and that’s part of the charm.

What to pack
Think light and breathable — it’s hot and humid most of the time. Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, a dry bag for beach days, and plenty of swimwear. A light rain jacket and sturdy walking shoes are also handy for rainforest hikes.

Respect the culture and nature
Limón is rich in Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous cultures — take the time to learn, listen, and support local communities. Try traditional dishes, buy from artisans, and remember to leave beaches and trails as pristine as you found them.

Safety & Security
The vibe along the southern Caribbean coast is friendly and laid-back, and most visitors feel very welcome here. That said, it’s always smart to take a few basic precautions like anywhere else you travel to. Don’t leave valuables unattended on the beach, lock up your belongings at your hotel, and opt for a car service or a taxi if you’re out late at night. Use common sense, stay aware of your surroundings, and you will have a carefree stay.
